My tattoo I got in memory of my Grandpa on July 27th, which was his birthday. A lot of people have asked me what it means, which is hard to explain since each part of the tattoo has a different meaning.

“Why is there a bird?”

• My grandpa loved and was always intrigued by birds. Naturally, a bird was a perfect fit for my tattoo. The bird depicted is a Goldfinch, which is the state bird of Iowa. Goldfinches are bright yellow (my grandpa’s favorite color) and are known to be extremely protective of their nests.

“What’s the meaning behind the cage?”

• The cage symbolizes anything that has crippled me, in particular, death.

“And the words?”

• They are lyrics from “Black Bird” by The Beatles. Basically, it’s saying that even though I’ve been hurt and that I’ve gone through loss, I still need to live on and enjoy my life. Also, the last movie I watched with my Grandpa was Across The Universe.
